Sugar Sheaux started out in our home kitchen baking treats and creating custom cakes for family and friends. In 2021, Sugar Sheaux became an official business name as we transitioned into a commercial kitchen inside Chef’s Table by Beauxjax. By 2022, we were able to grow into our storefront bakery you know and love today! it is because of YOU that we are able to do what we love every single day. We cherish the relationships that have been created through this journey and we love seeing your smiles when you see your custom cake or try a bite of our many desserts for the first time. We know that it is by the grace of God and our community that we have been blessed with this story, and we appreciate each and every one of you. Stop by the store and meet us while you sip on a handcrafted coffee, roasted by Big Cypress Coffee Company, and enjoy any of our fresh baked goods!
I’m Kacie and this is my story about how God used a type I diabetic to start a bakery business.
Growing up I always enjoyed being in the kitchen and coming up with crazy combinations of recipes or pairing different flavors together. I have always been a hands on person and learn the most when I am able to use my hands in whatever work I am doing. However… it never crossed my mind to one day own and run a bakery. As I grew older, my artistic side started coming out more and more, and I LOVED that because I could be very hands-on. Even so, as I started attending college, I was majoring in biology-related courses where I hoped to one day be in the medical field. You see, when I was eight years old, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I had to learn very quickly how to take care of myself, as this is a chronic condition that can turn bad at any minute. I also had the help of my family, friends, and amazing doctors and their staff. Being around hospitals and doctor’s offices so much, it was almost ingrained into me to pursue a career in the medical field. Little did I know, that was not God’s plan. I was quickly losing interest in the classes I was taking. After switching majors 4 times and attending 4 different colleges, I decided to take a break until I could find what I was most passionate about. Meanwhile, I began serving and eventually bartending where my ability to help others and create new relationships took a hold of my heart. Something else took a hold of my heart when I met my husband, Phillip, during this time. Less than a year after we married, we made a huge decision to leave where we were currently working, and had been loyal to for many years, and join our friends over at a brand new restaurant called Beauxjax. This was just the beginning of God’s plan. As I was bartending at Beauxjax, my love for baking and being artistic came back in full force. I could NOT STOP! I was creating custom cakes for family and friends and learning all from content I was seeing online. I was going, going, going, and learning from every mistake that was made. Word of mouth started growing beyond family and friends, and at this point I was offered the opportunity to start utilizing the kitchen inside the brand new Chef’s Table by Beauxjax. I also started creating staple desserts for Beauxjax and Frozen Pirogue (hello King Cake Cheesecake!). I figured I had at least a couple of years splitting my time between bartending and baking, but again, God had other plans. About a year after being in Chef’s Table, a building became available right in between Beauxjax and Bayou Axe. This was it. This was the time to go all in! Even though I figured I had a few more years before I could even dream of my own store front, I just knew I had to grasp this oppurtunity. I was overcome with excitement and it never occurred to me to even be nervous. Things seemed to move so quickly, too, that I didn’t have the time to be nervous! My relationship with God also grew during this time as I experienced many trials going from a steady income to almost nothing as we did our best to get the store going in the middle of post-pandemic! And still, I KNEW that God was going to take care of us. (I’d like to insert a HUGE THANK YOU to my husband for being so patient and supportive during this time!)... So now it was here. A dream that I didn’t even know was a dream was happening right before my eyes. But why? I didn’t deserve this. What was the purpose of this blessing? What am I called to do with this? Then came another part of God’s plan...
As the business was growing, I felt a strong urge to use my voice to speak out for the community of Type 1 Diabetics. In 2022, we hosted our very first “Dinner & A Sheaux” fundraiser. We used the funds to provide scholarships for local type 1 diabetic high school seniors and used the opportunity to educate others about type 1 diabetes. Man, I can’t even tell you the amount of passion and emotions I felt being able to make this happen. Not to mention the amount of support that was shown by friends, family, and our community who all made it possible! In 2023, we hosted a second “Dinner & A Sheaux” and it has now become an annual event!
What an unlikely pairing: a type 1 diabetic owning a bakery. I believe God has a sense of humor and used this as a strong platform to make His will happen! I believe we are currently in the middle of just another step in His plan, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds!
